Congress MP Questions Maoist Support for Vote Theft Claims in Maharashtra Elections
In a sharp take from Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, Congress MP Namdeo Kirsan has slammed Maoist groups for suddenly backing his party’s allegations of "vote chori" or vote theft in the recent elections. Speaking on Monday, Kirsan pointed out the irony: these very groups have long boycotted India’s electoral process, yet now they’re pointing fingers at the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for rigging votes.
Kirsan, who represents the Maoist-affected Gadchiroli district, didn’t hold back. "We’ve lived with Naxalism and Maoism here for years," he said. "In this area, elections couldn’t even happen in 45 to 55 villages because of their activities. These Maoists claim to fight the system but have zero faith in democracy. They’ve always boycotted polls and never voted. So, how can they suddenly support Congress’s vote theft charges against the BJP? It just doesn’t add up."
He even cast doubt on a recent statement from the Maoists’ Central Committee—their top decision-making body. This group accused PM Modi of stealing votes to win elections, starting from his days as Gujarat Chief Minister, right up to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and the Maharashtra Assembly elections. They went further, saying the BJP has been playing this "vote theft game" for years, and it’s only now that opposition parties like Congress are highlighting it. The Maoists called for a mass movement to expose what they see as flaws in parliamentary democracy.
But Kirsan isn’t buying it. "Who proves this statement is real? It could be some IT cell trick to spread confusion and help the BJP," he questioned. "People who skip elections and don’t vote have no business talking about vote rigging. I doubt their motives—why back Congress now when they’ve always opposed the whole process? I don’t trust this at all."
Kirsan’s words come amid heated debates over alleged irregularities in the Maharashtra elections. While opposition leaders have raised vote theft concerns, the Maoists’ unusual entry into the fray has only added fuel to the fire. For residents in Naxal-hit areas like Gadchiroli, where violence has disrupted voting for decades, this twist raises bigger questions about democracy’s reach in India’s heartland.
