Bhopal – Chief Minister Mohan Yadav welcomed the people on Saturday as the state kicked off the four‑day Chhath Puja festival. In a message posted on X, the CM wished devotees that Chhathi Maiya and Surya grant every mother’s wishes and bring endless joy, prosperity and abundance.
Chhath Puja, a sun‑worship tradition that dates back to the ancient Satyuga and Dwapara Yuga, is a major celebration in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Nepal. Now, thousands of Bihari, Jharkhandi and UP‑based residents in Madhya Pradesh are joining the festivities in cities like Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and Gwalior. Municipalities have opened ghats and set up special arrangements so that devotees can gather safely.
The festival’s first day, called Nahay‑Khaay, begins with a holy dip in a river or pond. After the bath, “Vratis” (those fast‑keeping devotees) eat a simple, sattvic meal of plain rice and bottle‑gourd curry. The day is all about purification and preparation for the days that follow.
The two‑day fasts on Day 2 (Kharna) and Day 4 (Usha Arghya) involve strict rules: no food or water from sunrise to sunset on Kharna, and breaking the fast after sunset prayers on Usha Arghya. On Day 3, Sandhya Arghya, devotees offer fruit, sugarcane and prasad to the setting sun at evening.
Key moments highlight gratitude, family well‑being, and community sharing. After each fast, the prasad is shared with relatives and neighbors, reinforcing unity and faith.
Chhath Puja remains a powerful symbol of devotion, self‑discipline, and respect for the sun’s life‑giving energy. As the festival lights up northern India, it reminds millions of the simple, pure joy of thanking the Earth’s brightest star for its bounty.
