Bengaluru, Oct. 23 – Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will join a meeting of southern state urban‑development ministers in Bengaluru on Oct. 30. The conference aims to discuss funding and policy priorities for cities in the region, especially the rapidly growing Greater Bengaluru area.
Shivakumar told reporters that he and state leaders will use the minister’s visit to push for more central funds for the city’s development. “We will present our demands directly. We’ve already met the Union Ministers and the Prime Minister many times to ask for grants for Bengaluru,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister also briefed on his recent trips to outlying markets that could fall under the jurisdiction of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). He toured border regions of local bodies within the Bengaluru Urban District that might be absorbed by the GBA’s expanded limits. “I met with officials and a committee chaired by B.S. Patil is finalising a report on which areas will join the GBA,” Shivakumar explained. He added that lawmakers, citizens and civic groups will discuss the changes in upcoming meetings.
In the coming weekend, Shivakumar will kick off a “Bengaluru Nadige” walk program, inviting residents to share their concerns. He plans to meet with IT‑BT companies in Mahadevapura and K.R. Puram afterward to hear their views on infrastructure and growth.
When asked about the pothole‑repair deadline, Shivakumar said the state has put responsibility on officials and is actively closing the gaps. “We’re replacing old patches with fresh layers of road where needed. Major areas are our priority, and we’ll work faster once the rain stops,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister declined to comment on recent political controversies involving the Chief Minister’s son and certain MLAs, saying he would speak on the matter later. He confirmed that a SIT inquiry has found evidence of 6,000 miscounted votes in the Aland constituency, attributing the tampering to phone‑number manipulation and stating that the law will handle the case.
With its focus on urban infrastructure, public participation and tighter governance, this conference could shape Bengaluru’s future timeline and improve the city’s connectivity, real‑estate values and overall livability.
