CBI arrests three postal officials in Meghalaya bribery case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested three officials from India’s Postal Department in a bribery scandal that began in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district. The suspects are the assistant branch postmaster, the sub‑division inspector, and a postman from the Rongjeng Sub‑Office.
The CBI opened the case on October 4 after a complaint from the block postmaster of Rongjeng. The complainant, a Gram Dak Sevak, said the three accused demanded a bribe equivalent to two months’ salary. He claimed the Postal Department had withheld his regular pay for ten months. After negotiations, the accused agreed to accept a Rs 30,000 bribe, telling the complainant to pay once his salary was finally released.
During a sting operation, the assistant branch postmaster was caught red‑handed accepting the bribe at his office in Williamnagar, Meghalaya. He was immediately taken into custody. The other two suspects were detained later: the sub‑division inspector was arrested in Shillong, and the postman was taken into custody in Ambassa, Tripura’s Dhalai district on October 7.
CBI officials searched the suspects’ offices and homes. They found evidence documents and seized Rs 2.3 lakh in cash from the postman’s residence in Upanagar village, Tripura. All three accused will appear before a competent court for further proceedings.
The investigation continues. ()
