Big Changes in Meghalaya Cabinet: New Ministers Set to Take Oath Today
Shillong is buzzing with excitement as the Conrad K. Sangma-led Meghalaya government gears up for a major cabinet reshuffle. The swearing-in ceremony for the new ministers is happening today at 5 p.m. at Raj Bhavan, marking a fresh start for the state’s leadership.
In a bold move, eight current ministers are getting the boot to make way for new faces. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma met Governor Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar on Monday evening and handed over the list of incoming legislators. This shake-up in the Meghalaya cabinet is already sparking lively debates across the political scene.
From the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), four key ministers are stepping down: Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal, Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma, and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Comingone Ymbon. Stepping into their shoes are fresh talents like Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun, Resubelpara MLA and former Deputy Speaker Timothy D. Shira, Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Passah, and Dalu MLA Brening A. Sangma. These new additions bring new energy to the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA).
The United Democratic Party (UDP) is also seeing changes, with senior leaders Paul Lyngdoh and Kyrmen Shylla making way. Taking their places are UDP president and Mairang MLA Metbah Lyngdoh, along with Amlarem MLA Lahkmen Rymbui. In the BJP camp, Alexander L. Hek is out, replaced by South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai. Meanwhile, HSPDP’s Shakliar Warjri hands over to Mawshynrut MLA Methodius Dkhar.
This Meghalaya cabinet reshuffle has insiders talking non-stop. Many are surprised by the dropped names, and political observers point out that the NPP’s earlier push to include every ally in the MDA might be causing headaches now. Conrad Sangma faces tough choices to juggle party loyalties, district needs, and senior roles.
The changes will shake up the cabinet’s makeup too. With Ampareen Lyngdoh’s exit, the new Council of Ministers will have zero women—a big shift in gender representation. Kyrmen Shylla’s removal means East Jaintia Hills loses its spot, as UDP’s seat goes to Lahkmen Rymbui from West Jaintia Hills.
Adding to the family ties, the revamped cabinet will feature three ministers from the same clan: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, his brother-in-law Wailadmiki Shylla, and relative Sosthenes Sohtun. Party sources whisper that first-time MLA Santa Mary Shylla could have filled the gap for women’s and East Jaintia Hills representation, but leaders chose a different path.
As Meghalaya politics heats up, all eyes are on how this reshuffle impacts the state’s future. Stay tuned for more updates on the new ministers and their big plans.
