Heavy Rain Alert in West Bengal: Orange Warning for Kolkata and Several Districts
Kolkata is bracing for heavy showers as the Regional Meteorological Centre issues an orange alert for intense rainfall across multiple districts in West Bengal. Expect thunderstorms and downpours from Wednesday to Friday in South Bengal, including the bustling city of Kolkata.
The weather department warns of heavy rain paired with thunderstorms in key areas like East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Bankura, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Purulia. Officials have slapped an orange alert on these districts to prepare residents for possible disruptions. Come Saturday, scattered thunderstorms could pop up across all South Bengal districts, so keep an eye on the skies.
What’s causing this wet spell? A met department official explains that cyclonic circulations are stirring things up—one over East Bihar and nearby regions, another in the southeast Bay of Bengal, plus two more near northeast Bangladesh and central Assam. These systems are pulling in moisture from the Bay of Bengal, leading to rain in South Bengal. Heavy rain might hit isolated spots, making roads slippery and daily life a bit tricky.
Rain could bring a slight dip in temperatures, but don’t count on full relief—high humidity will keep things muggy and uncomfortable. In Kolkata, Wednesday’s minimum temperature clocked in at 26.6 degrees Celsius, just 0.2 degrees above normal. Tuesday’s maximum hit 31.1 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees below average.
North Bengal isn’t escaping the action either. This week brings chances of heavy rain up there too, with very heavy downpours expected in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur starting Wednesday. An orange alert covers these six districts to urge caution against flooding or travel issues.
Scattered thunderstorms may also roll into South Dinajpur and Malda. On Thursday, heavy rain forecasts target Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar again. Friday looks stormy for North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda with more thunderstorms.
