India’s Ministry of Ayush just took a big step forward in fighting cancer by opening the country’s first Integrative Oncology Research and Care Centre (IORCC) at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in Dhargal, Goa. The launch happened on September 27 in Panaji, tying into the 10th National Ayurveda Day celebrations.
This cutting-edge facility brings together ancient Ayurvedic practices and modern medicine to deliver personalized, evidence-based support for cancer patients. It focuses on holistic rehabilitation, helping people recover from treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation while easing side effects and boosting immunity through integrative cancer care.
Goa Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju cut the ribbon, with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant joining the event. The center stands out as one of India’s first multidisciplinary hubs, combining Ayurveda, yoga, physiotherapy, diet therapy, Panchakarma detox, and advanced oncology all in one place.
Chief Minister Sawant praised the effort, saying it results from teamwork between the Goa government, AIIA Goa, and the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) at Tata Memorial Center. “This Integrative Oncology Centre marks a key moment in our battle against cancer,” Sawant noted. “By blending modern therapies with proven Ayurvedic methods, we’re improving recovery, cutting down side effects, and building stronger defenses. It sets a global standard for holistic cancer treatment that other places in India can follow.”
Leading the center is Prof. Sujata Kadam, Dean of AIIA Goa, with Sanjay Khedekar as convener. The team features top oncologists and integrative medicine experts, including Dr. Shekhar Salkar and AIIA Goa faculty.
This move highlights India’s push to merge traditional wisdom with cutting-edge science, creating a stronger healthcare system. It could inspire similar integrative oncology initiatives nationwide, making cancer care more accessible and effective for everyone.
