India’s Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Culture teamed up on Monday with a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the exciting Stitched Ship Project, centered on the INSV Kaundinya. This initiative brings back India’s ancient maritime traditions and traditional craftsmanship, giving a nod to the country’s rich seafaring history.
The INSV Kaundinya is no ordinary boat—it’s a traditional wooden sailing vessel built using the old-school stitched ship technique that’s unique to India. Builders skipped modern tools like welding or riveting, sticking to time-honored methods to create this beauty. The Ministry of Defence shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting how #INSVKaundinya revives these lost arts.
Under the MoU, the Indian Navy takes charge of everything from maintenance and operations to crewing the ship and planning its journeys. Later this year, the vessel will head out on a voyage to Oman, following the ancient trade and cultural routes that connected civilizations across the Indian Ocean thousands of years ago. It’s a cool way to honor India’s maritime heritage while building ties with neighboring countries.
In other Indian Navy news, the indigenous stealth frigate INS Satpura docked in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Monday, where it got a warm welcome from the Sri Lanka Navy. The visit underscores the strong friendship between the two nations and their shared goal of promoting peace and prosperity in the region, as the Indian Navy spokesperson noted on X.
During the stopover, sailors from both navies will join forces for professional exchanges, including rescue drills, force protection training, yoga sessions, and even sports events. These activities aim to sharpen skills and foster teamwork.
The trip also featured top-level talks to boost naval cooperation. The Commanding Officer of INS Satpura met with Rear Admiral SJ Kumara, Commander of Sri Lanka’s Western Naval Area, to discuss ways to improve joint maritime operations and interoperability. The conversations align with India’s #NeighbourhoodFirst policy and #MAHASAGAR initiative, focusing on deeper partnerships in the Indian Ocean region.
