In Kolkata on November 12, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) blasted members of the BJP as “habitual misogynists” after a video surfaced that could show Union Minister Shantanu Thakur insulting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The video, which TMC posted on social media, supposedly has Thakur calling Banerjee’s face a “bat‑sucked mango” and blaming the Election Commission’s special review of the state for his comment. could not confirm the video’s authenticity.
TMC’s statement was clear: “Misogyny is not accidental in the BJP. From the Prime Minister down to the foot soldiers, the party institutionalises the degradation of women,” the message read. The group added that the comment is part of a broader pattern of male‑chauvinistic language from senior BJP figures. They cited other instances—Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s so‑called “Didi‑O‑Didi” catcall, remarks by Giriraj Singh and Sukanta Majumdar, and obscene comments from Abhijit Gangopadhyay—to paint a picture of moral decay within the party.
According to TMC, Thakur’s insult shows how BJP leaders feel insecure when facing a strong, respected woman in politics. The party argues that the BJP’s strategy is to demean Banerjee personally because it cannot win against her politically. TMC said Bengal will respond “where it hurts most—at the ballot box.”
BJP leaders in West Bengal responded that a similar criticism is unfair. They reminded that over the years senior BJP members, including the Chief Minister, have used strong language toward the Prime Minister and Home Minister Amit Shah in public forums. The debate continues as both sides rally their supporters ahead of upcoming elections.
