Kerala Politics Heats Up Over Supreme Court Verdict on Waqf Amendment Act

In Kerala, the Supreme Court’s latest ruling on the Waqf Amendment Act has sparked a big political showdown. The BJP is celebrating the interim decision as a win for the law, while the Congress-led opposition pushes hard for its full scrapping. This development comes amid ongoing debates about Waqf land disputes and constitutional rights in India.

BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar wasted no time hailing the verdict. He slammed the Congress for calling the Waqf Amendment unconstitutional, saying the Supreme Court has now proven them wrong. "This amendment tackles serious Waqf encroachment problems affecting thousands of people, including families in Munambam," Chandrasekhar explained.

He highlighted how the court stayed clear of key changes, like scrapping Section 40 and adding Section 2, which aim to fix these land issues. Chandrasekhar also pointed out that the ruling rejects opposition efforts—led by Congress, Muslim League, CPI-M, and other INDIA bloc parties—to block non-Muslims from joining Waqf Boards and Councils.

"The BJP’s commitment to Munambam residents is now real. This helps both those facing fake Waqf claims and true Waqf properties. But the opposition, stuck in vote-bank games, keeps fighting it. They should support people battling for their land," he added.

On the other side, Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan sees the Supreme Court verdict as a major boost for constitutional values. The court put a hold on parts of the Waqf Amendment Act, including the rule that someone must practice Islam for five years to create a Waqf, and the extra powers given to District Collectors to decide on these matters.

Satheesan called it a direct challenge to the amendment’s core purpose. "We need to repeal the whole thing, not just tweak a few bits," he said. He praised the court’s view that Collectors can’t meddle in personal religious rights and its limits on non-Muslim roles in Waqf bodies.

"This hits hard at the Sangh Parivar’s push for a communal agenda through laws. It reminds everyone that India’s Constitution stays true to its roots," Satheesan declared.

As Waqf Amendment Act reactions pour in from Kerala, the debate highlights tensions over land rights, religious freedoms, and political strategies in the state. Stay tuned for more updates on this Supreme Court Waqf ruling and its impact on Indian politics.
