New Delhi – Veteran Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign‑policy style on Tuesday, saying the government has turned diplomacy into a personal brand that relies too much on public displays of friendship.
Aiyar was speaking to reporters after former U.S. President Donald Trump repeated his claim that he personally brokered a cease‑fire between India and Pakistan. “Foreign policy should never be made personal,” Aiyar told the crowd in Delhi. When a journalist asked how the BJP‑led government could claim big successes abroad, the veteran replied that Modi’s biggest mistake was turning diplomacy into a one‑man show.
He added, “Just because the Prime Minister has hugged leaders everywhere, that does not make India number one in the world. India’s entire foreign service must be used to build real relationships, and the government should talk to experienced foreign‑policy experts.”
On U.S. tariff threats and the issue of oil imports from Russia, Aiyar pointed out that public‑sector companies are no longer buying Russian oil, only private players are, according to his information.
When the BJP celebrated the lighting of 26 lakh lamps in Ayodhya during Deep otsav, labeling it a win for Sanatan Dharma, Aiyar, who identifies as an atheist, said he had nothing to add.
His comments mix sharp sarcasm and criticism, underscoring his ongoing disapproval of Modi’s foreign‑policy approach and the growing use of religion in Indian politics.
