Rain continues to batter Himachal Pradesh, causing fresh headaches for residents and pushing the monsoon death toll to 448, according to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA).
The latest numbers show 261 people lost their lives in rain-related disasters like landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts. Another 187 died in road accidents linked to the wet weather. Landslides proved especially deadly this season, claiming 53 lives.
The State Emergency Operation Centre’s evening report highlights ongoing chaos: 352 roads stay blocked, 68 power distribution transformers are out, and 100 water supply schemes face issues. These disruptions hit daily life hard, from travel to electricity and clean water access.
Mandi district suffers the most, with 120 roads closed, 12 transformers down, and 41 water schemes disrupted. In Kullu, 106 roads remain shut and 13 transformers are offline. Kangra reports 40 blocked roads, while Hamirpur deals with the biggest power woes—31 transformers affected and 22 water schemes hit. Chamba has seven water supply problems.
Even major routes feel the impact: Two national highways, NH-03 and NH-503A, are blocked, but crews work around the clock to clear them.
Beyond the human toll, the rains have wrecked havoc on property and livelihoods. Total damage to homes, crops, livestock, roads, power lines, water systems, and schools tops Rs 4,841.79 crore. Mandi, Shimla, and Kangra districts report the heaviest losses.
Officials note 496 people suffered injuries this monsoon season, 47 are still missing, and over 29,000 livestock have died. Thousands of houses stand fully or partly damaged, forcing families from their homes and adding to the displacement crisis in Himachal Pradesh.
The SDMA urges everyone to stay alert as scattered rains linger and landslide risks hang over the state. Relief efforts ramp up, with restoration work underway and compensation payments reaching affected families. ()
