Thiruvananthapuram, September 6 – Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi has made a strong statement in support of the transgender community in Kerala. During an Onam celebration in the state capital, Gopi announced he is willing to resign from his ministerial post for two days to lead protests if the Kerala government, led by Pinarayi Vijayan, does not fulfill its promise to provide financial help to transgender people.
Gopi’s bold pledge came as he joined members of the transgender community in a celebration filled with cultural performances, honoring those who have achieved success in various fields. The event also featured the lighting of the lamp, distribution of new clothes for Onam (Onakkodi), and a traditional Onam feast (Onasadya), which the minister happily participated in.
Talking about the issues faced by the community, Suresh Gopi emphasized the importance of government support. “Supporting the transgender community is a divine act,” he said. “The government must provide financial aid for healthcare and surgeries. I will personally contribute funds to help ten transgender individuals undergo surgeries.” He added that if the government doesn’t act, he is ready to step down for two days to lead protests and then return to his duties as a minister.
Suresh Gopi, who used to be an actor before entering politics, is known for his consistent support for transgender rights. He previously donated Rs 12 lakh to Amrita Hospital to cover gender-affirming surgeries, and surgeries for ten transgender persons have already been successfully completed with his help.
This statement has energized activists and supporters, who see it as a rare and meaningful show of solidarity from a Union minister. Many appreciate Gopi’s ongoing efforts to stand with Kerala’s transgender community and highlight the urgent need for the government to provide proper financial and healthcare support to those in need.
