A woman in Telangana’s Nalgonda district has been charged with killing her two children before dying by suicide, police said on Monday, a tragedy that has shocked the region.
The incident happened early in the morning at Kondamallepally in the Nalgonda district. According to police, 27‑year‑old Kanchala Nagalaxmi strangled her nine‑year‑old daughter, Avantika, and her seven‑year‑old son, Bavan Sai. She then hanged herself. The bodies were taken to the police station for an autopsy.
Police say the family’s disputes led to the tragedy. Kanchala’s husband had left the house earlier that day after an argument, and investigators believe that argument was a trigger. The couple had moved from Bapatla district in neighboring Andhra Pradesh to Nalgonda for work a few years ago. Kanchala worked as a daily‑wage laborer and her husband was employed as a construction worker. The investigation is ongoing and the police have notified relatives in Bapatla.
This case is part of a disturbing pattern of similar incidents in Telangana. Last week, a 27‑year‑old woman in Hyderabad’s Balanagar area killed her twin toddlers, two‑year‑olds named Chetan and Lasyata, before leaping from the fourth floor of her apartment. Police said that constant arguments with her husband over the children’s health problems, including a speech impairment that required regular therapy, contributed to the tragedy.
In August, another woman pushed her two sons into a water sump, drowning the older child and nearly drowning the younger one. The attacker survived after a passerby pulled her out of the water. Police said financial stress and repeated quarrels over family‑planning issues were involved.
Earlier this year, a woman in Gajularamaram killed her two sons with an axe and then jumped to her death from the fifth floor of their apartment. Police noted that she had a long‑standing eye condition that she feared was hereditary, and that she had been in conflict with her husband over the treatment of the illness.
These repeated incidents highlight the urgent need for better mental‑health support, conflict resolution resources, and stronger safety nets for families in Telangana. Police and local authorities are examining how to prevent such tragedies in the future. For now, the investigations into Kanchala Nagalaxmi’s case remain a priority for local law‑enforcement agencies.
