Bhopal, Oct 18 – At a farmers’ rally in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh BJP chief Hemant Khandelwal blasted the opposition Congress, saying it staged a “drama” over farmer issues and that it failed to launch key schemes while in power.
During the “Kisan Sammelan” event held in Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s residence, Khandelwal slammed Congress leaders. “When Congress takes office, they shoot at farmers, just like the Multai firing in Betul district,” he said. “They are putting on a show to get more media attention.” He added that both central and state Congress heads are “misleading the people.”
Khandelwal pointed out that Congress never introduced landmark farmer‑benefit programs such as Kisan Samman, Bhawantar, and the PM Kisan Nidhi while it governed Madhya Pradesh. He recalled the 1998 Multai incident when 18 farmers were reportedly killed after protesting for compensation for crop damage caused by rain and hailstorms.
The remarks came just three days after Congress leaders, led by state president Jitu Patwari, staged a protest outside former CM and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s home in Bhopal. Police charged several Congress members, including Patwari, under Section 223 of the Brihan Navay‑Sahitya Act for unlawful assembly outside the minister’s residence.
Khandelwal reiterated that the current BJP government, guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is committed to empowering farmers through a range of welfare schemes. “We’re working for farmers, but simply raising crop prices and offering payouts for losses isn’t enough,” he said. “The agricultural sector needs a comprehensive overhaul to guarantee farmers’ economic growth.”
He also highlighted a state initiative to elevate the Sanchi Milk brand to a national level. “Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is pushing this project hard,” he added. “One day Sanchi Milk will stand beside big names like Amul.”
The BJP’s push for farmer welfare and the push to raise local cooperative dairy brands came amid heightened tensions with the Congress, as local protests and police actions highlighted the political contest over agricultural reforms in Madhya Pradesh.
