MP: Four seers killed in road accident

A tragic accident near Temni Khurd village in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district has left four seers dead and three others fighting for their lives. It happened late Friday evening on the busy Betul highway, shaking the local community.

The seven spiritual pilgrims, all from Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh, were heading back after visiting the famous Balajipuram temple in Betul. Their Bolero vehicle hit a sudden snag—a rear tyre burst—sending it swerving off the road and straight into a deep roadside well. The crash turned into a nightmare as the car got stuck in the water.

Eyewitnesses say villagers sprang into action right away, even before help arrived. Using ropes and their quick thinking, they pulled out three people from the flooded vehicle amid the chaos. But four seers remained trapped inside the submerged car, leading to a tense rescue mission by police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). The teams worked through the night to free everyone.

Sadly, the four seers didn’t make it. They were Kallu alias Laxmi Giri (24), Malkhan Giri (65), Rakesh Giri (35), and Gulab Giri (40). Rescue workers finally recovered their bodies after hours of effort.

The three survivors—seers Makhanju Giri (27) and Shivpujan Giri (60), plus the driver Rakesh Giri (32)—got rushed to Chhindwara District Hospital. Doctors are treating their serious injuries, and they’re stable for now.

Betul Deputy Superintendent of Police R.P. Choubey confirmed the tyre burst caused the Madhya Pradesh road accident. He praised the villagers for their brave response and said the police and SDRF acted fast to save lives and get medical aid to the hurt ones.

This Betul accident has sparked widespread grief and fresh worries about road safety on the highway. Those deep, unprotected wells along the route have been a hidden danger for years, and locals are urging authorities to act now—think barriers, better signs, and fixes to stop such tragedies.

It’s a grim reminder: Just days ago, a similar crash near Mandsaur town killed 12 people when a car plunged into a well. With so many pilgrims traveling these routes to temples like Balajipuram, calls are growing louder for improved infrastructure to keep everyone safe.
