At least 11 people from a group heading to a Durga idol immersion ceremony in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district are feared dead after their tractor trolley plunged into the Abna River on Thursday.
The tragic accident happened when excited young villagers ignored warnings from officials and drove the overloaded vehicle into the water. Khandwa Collector Ravish Gupta, who rushed to the scene, told reporters that the trolley overturned, sweeping away multiple people. “There was a team of young folks who got carried away with the excitement,” Gupta explained. “We had warned them not to go, but they did anyway. Now, 11 are missing despite our efforts to save them.”
Among the victims are several minor girls and boys, some women, and one adult man. Search and rescue teams, including police and disaster relief officials, are working hard in Jamli village near Khandwa to recover all bodies and find any survivors. Operations continue as the community mourns the loss during the festive Durga Puja celebrations.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and another similar tragedy in Khargone’s Jamli village and near Ujjain’s Ingoria police station. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said, “These accidents during Durga idol immersions are heartbreaking. My heart goes out to the grieving families.”
Yadav announced immediate financial aid of Rs 4 lakh for each deceased person’s family. He also directed authorities to ensure the injured get top-notch treatment at the nearest hospital. “I pray to Maa Durga for the quick recovery of the hurt and strength for those who lost loved ones,” he added.
