MP to honour Sonu Nigam with Lata Mangeshkar award; Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy may skip ceremony

Indore’s music scene is buzzing as Chief Minister Mohan Yadav prepares to honor two big names in Indian music with the prestigious National Lata Mangeshkar Award. The ceremony happens Sunday in Indore, celebrating the legendary singer’s enduring legacy.
The award goes to the popular music trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy for their 2024 contributions, though they’ll receive it later since they’re currently out of the country and can’t make it to Indore. Sonu Nigam, the versatile playback singer known for hits and devotional tracks, picks up the 2025 honor right on the spot.
Madhya Pradesh’s government hosts this annual event to keep alive the memory of Lata Mangeshkar, the “Nightingale of India” famous for her timeless classical and Bollywood songs. It falls on what would have been her 96th birth anniversary, and Indore holds a special place as her hometown.
The two-day festival started Saturday at the Lata Mangeshkar Auditorium in Paraspar Nagar, where local artists kicked things off with moving performances. “Lataji’s voice crossed generations and touched the heart of our nation,” CM Yadav said. “Giving this award to talents like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Sonu Nigam builds a bridge from her classic tunes to today’s fresh Indian music vibes.”
Yadav, a strong supporter of arts and culture, will also launch an exhibition tracing Lata Mangeshkar’s journey—from her early days in Indore to her rise as a global playback icon.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy earned fame for their catchy film scores in movies like Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Rock On, blending Indian rhythms with Western flair. Sonu Nigam, with an impressive catalog of over 20,000 songs in various languages, shines as a true all-rounder in the industry.
After the awards, the night ramps up with a live show from singer Ankit Tiwari and his band. Expect soulful covers of Lata Mangeshkar’s hits mixed with modern favorites.
The auditorium, decked out in flowers and old photos of the legend, will welcome more than 2,000 guests, including Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai C Patel and Culture Minister Vishwas Sarang. Winners get Rs 5 lakh cash, a citation, a trophy, and a traditional shawl as tokens of recognition.
Music lovers from across India are flocking to Indore for this mix of tribute, melody, and star power, highlighting the lasting impact of Lata Mangeshkar on Bollywood and beyond.
