In Guna, Madhya Pradesh, a lively three-day fair kicked off on Thursday to spotlight Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Vocal for Local’ push. This event, part of the nationwide Seva Pakhwada, runs until September 27 and features handmade products from women’s self-help groups (SHGs) across the district.
The Municipal Corporation and Livelihood Mission teamed up to organize the fair. Local leaders, including Guna MLA Pannalal Shakya, BJP District President, Collector Kishore Kumar Kanyal, District Panchayat CEO Abhishek Dubey, SDM Shivani Pandey, and Deputy Collector Manjusha Khatri, cut the ribbon to launch it. They strolled through the stalls, chatted with the women entrepreneurs, and snapped up some local goodies to show their backing for Vocal for Local.
BJP leader Dharmendra Sikarwar highlighted the timing: “Seva Pakhwada honors Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday and Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya’s birth anniversary on September 25. It’s a nationwide celebration of our most beloved leader, and the government keeps pushing Swadeshi and local businesses.”
Collector Kanyal praised the buzz: “This fair boosts ‘Vocal for Local’ big time. Crowds poured in from the morning, and SHG products are flying off the shelves. We’re aiming for 55,000 Lakhpati Didis in Guna district—women earning over a lakh rupees annually—and we’ve already hit 33,000.”
Seva Pakhwada, from September 17 to October 2, spotlights key drives like cleanliness, health, water conservation, and women’s empowerment. Locals can’t get enough of it.
Visitor Shalu Jain from Guna shared, “It’s inspiring to see women step up, build careers, and sell their own creations. Prime Minister Modi needs to roll out more programs like this.”
Deepak Sharma chimed in: “Thanks to PM Modi for championing ‘Vocal for Local.’ It motivates us to embrace Indian culture and buy homegrown products.”
SHG member Kanti Jha added, “We’re making good money and standing on our own feet through these efforts.” Her fellow participant Jasmine Jha said, “PM Modi has opened our eyes—women like us are now empowered and self-reliant.”
The government backs these women with real support, including funds to upgrade looms and toolkits, spark design innovations, and develop handloom and handicraft products through cluster programs. They also get marketing help via expos and branding events to sell local handmade items far and wide.
