In Katni district of Madhya Pradesh, a Dalit youth has reported a brutal attack by the local village head and his aides after he tried to stop illegal mining operations.
The young man, Rajkumar Chaudhary of Bahuriband, says that Ramanuj Pandey, the village head, beat him severely and that one of Pandey’s men urinated on him as a form of intimidation. Chaudhary also claims that when his mother stepped in to defend him, she was pounded and verbally abused by the same group involved in the illegal mining.
The incident happened only a few days ago. Chaudhary filed a written complaint with Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Santosh Dehariya, located in Karni. After submitting the complaint, Chaudhary told reporters that he was forced to flee the scene, was taken to Katni hospital, and stayed there for three days because of serious head and body injuries.
“I wanted to die after this incident, but I decided to tell senior police officials,” Chaudhary told the press. “They insulted me with caste slurs, and one of the Sarpanch’s men urinated on me.”
ASP Dehariya confirmed that the police received the complaint and have directed the local station to investigate the matter. The investigation will focus on the alleged assault and the illegal mining activities linked to the village head’s organization.
The case highlights growing tensions in rural Madhya Pradesh over illegal mining, as local communities increasingly challenge powerful village leaders. Police will examine evidence of the assault and the illegal mining claims, with a view to holding the accused accountable.
