Mumbai, Oct 14 – The Maharashtra Revenue Department has announced a new rule that will make it easier for anyone in Mumbai to register documents at any stamp office in the city. The old rule that required people to use the office in their particular neighbourhood has been scrapped.

“Citizens, businesses and company owners in Mumbai and its suburbs can now register property agreements, lease contracts, inheritance deeds and other important papers at any of the six stamp offices in the city,” said Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule. “You can go to Borivali, Kurla, Andheri, Mumbai City or the main office near the Old Custom House – it doesn’t matter where you live or where your business is located.”

The move follows the department’s recent “one district, one registration” pilot, which let residents register documents anywhere within a district. Maharashtra officials hope to roll out a “one state, one registration” scheme soon, allowing people to register documents at any state office.

Stamp duty and registration fees are major revenue streams for the state. In 2024‑25, the state raised ₹60 000 crore, and it plans to hit ₹65 000 crore next year. Mumbai alone contributes roughly ₹15 000 crore each year.

Earlier this month, Bawankule also unveiled a policy to clear land survey cases in just 30 days. A new gazette notice now applies to a range of surveys, including subdivisions, boundary marking, non‑agricultural conversions and forest rights claims, speeding up the process for those seeking to secure property rights.
