In West Bengal, tensions are high after a BJP MP and national spokesman, Sudhanshu Trivedi, publicly accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of orchestrating an attack on two opposition leaders, Khagen Murmu and Shankar Ghosh. The incident happened in Nagrakata, a town in North Bengal that has been hit hard by floods and landslides.
Trivedi said the assault proved that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has turned the state into a “jungle raj” since it took power. He repeated the claim that the government is turning a blind eye to the flood crisis while the chief minister attends a music carnival in Kolkata.
The attack was recorded on video and shared by BJP’s West Bengal co‑incharge Amit Malviya, who also accused TMC fanatics of inciting violence. Malviya posted that “TMC jungle raj in Bengal” was at play when Murmu, a respected tribal MP from North Malda, was hit while bringing relief supplies to the flood‑stricken area. He said the attack left Murmu with a head injury.
Sambit Patra, a prominent BJP leader, echoed the call for accountability and said the event was the latest example of political violence in the state.
BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh, whose family was also targeted, joined Trivedi to demand a probe into the events. He said the assault took place during their relief work. Trivedi described it as a “dastardly” act that undermines democracy.
The flood and landslide disaster has left large parts of North Bengal in distress. Residents await relief, but critics argue that the central government’s response has been slow. The BJP is urging its leaders to investigate the alleged assault quickly and bring those responsible to justice.
This incident has amplified debate over law and order, governance, and how political competition may threaten the safety of public servants in West Bengal during natural disasters.
