Manipur Terror Attack: N Biren Singh Mourns Assam Rifles Jawans Killed in Ambush

In a shocking terror attack in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, two brave Assam Rifles personnel lost their lives, and five others got injured. The incident happened on Friday evening in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area, shaking the entire region.

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh shared his deep sorrow over the tragedy. He called it a "cruel blow" to the nation and offered heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. Singh also demanded the strictest punishment for those behind this cowardly act.

In a post on X, Singh wrote, "I am deeply shaken to hear about the ambush on our brave 33 Assam Rifles personnel at Nambol Sabal Leikai. The loss of two jawans and injuries to several others is a cruel blow to us all. My deepest condolences to the families of the fallen and prayers for the quick recovery of the injured. Their courage and sacrifice will remain in our hearts forever. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must face the harshest punishment."

Security forces revealed that unidentified terrorists ambushed a vehicle convoy of the 33 Assam Rifles around 5:50 pm on September 19. The attack took place on National Highway 2 (NH-2) in a crowded, built-up area during dusk. The jawans faced heavy automatic gunfire without any warning. Among the dead was a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO).

The injured soldiers received quick medical help and were rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital in Imphal. Doctors say they are now stable. Security teams have launched search operations to track down the attackers, but no group has claimed responsibility yet. This bold strike happened in an area where the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) had been lifted, making it even more alarming.

Manipur has been struggling with ethnic violence since May 3, 2023, mainly between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. The clashes have forced thousands of families to flee their homes, creating a humanitarian crisis.

Amid these tensions, there’s some positive news on the peace front. Earlier this month, the Kuki-Zo Council agreed to reopen National Highway 2 for free movement of people and essential goods. This key route connects Manipur to Nagaland and the rest of Northeast India, but it stayed blocked since the violence began in 2023.

The decision came after talks in New Delhi between Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officials and Kuki-Zo leaders. The council promised full support to Indian security forces working to keep peace along NH-2. Reopening the highway will ease the daily struggles of displaced families in relief camps and bring much-needed relief to civilians.

In another step towards calm, MHA held a tripartite meeting with Manipur government reps, Kuki National Organisation (KNO), and United People’s Front (UPF). They signed a new Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement for one year, with fresh rules to build trust.

Key changes include protecting Manipur’s borders, pushing for talks to end the conflict, and moving seven Kuki camps away from trouble spots. The groups will cut down on camps, store weapons in nearby CRPF and BSF facilities, and verify all members to weed out any outsiders. A joint team will watch over these rules, and any breaches could lead to tough action, including scrapping the deal.

These efforts show hope for lasting peace in Manipur amid the ongoing ethnic tensions and terror threats. Security remains tight as investigations continue into the Assam Rifles ambush.
