Bhubaneswar, November 14 – Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik congratulated Jay Dholakia on winning the Nuapada by‑poll. Patnaik called for the new BJP MLA to use the mandate to bring real development to the district.
“I thank the BJP candidate for his win,” Patnaik tweeted. “Elections know how to change, but it is our values and respect for people that stay true.” The comment hinted that the BJD believes the ruling party may have misused power during the by‑poll. Patnaik said the Election Commission of India must keep elections free and fair.
The opposition leader pledged that BJD will keep fighting for Odisha’s people “to protect their rights” and noted the party’s long‑standing resolve. He thanked BJD leaders and workers who worked hard for the Nuapada vote.
Jay Dholakia, the BJP candidate, drew 123,869 votes and beat Congress’s Ghasiram Majhi by 83,748 votes – the biggest margin among the eight by‑elections held across Bihar and Odisha. BJD’s Snehangini Chhuria finished third with 38,408 votes. The outcome gave the BJP a total of 79 seats in Odisha’s 147‑member Assembly, taking the Nuapada seat from BJD.
