India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is ramping up its fight against drug trafficking with back-to-back successes. In a recent court ruling, a drug smuggler in Uttar Pradesh faces 12 years of hard labor behind bars, plus a hefty Rs 1 lakh fine, after officials seized opium from him.
The action started back on March 2, 2024, when the NCB’s Lucknow Zonal Unit nabbed Satish Kumar in Bareilly. They caught him with 4 kilograms of opium based on solid intelligence tips. A judge at the Special NDPS Court in Bareilly convicted him under key sections of the NDPS Act of 1985—specifically 08, 18, and 29—on September 26. Investigators wrapped up their probe quickly, filed charges on August 17, and presented five witnesses during the trial that sealed the deal.
NCB officials hailed this as a major step in their ongoing battle to curb narcotics and protect communities from drug dangers. It shows how well their intelligence teams, lawyers, and partners work together to bring traffickers to justice.
Just days later, on September 26, NCB teamed up with Assam Rifles for another bold strike in Manipur’s Chandel district, right near the Myanmar border. Acting on fresh intel, they set up a vehicle checkpoint at Bala Point. Spotting a white Gypsy and a motorcycle heading their way, the team watched as the drivers stopped short—about 60 to 70 meters away—and bolted into the nearby woods.
A quick chase by 22 personnel from both agencies turned into a full sweep of the area. They caught the two suspects red-handed. A search turned up 67.26 kilograms of addictive methamphetamine tablets, worth a whopping Rs 53.8 crore on the street. Authorities handed the drugs and the peddlers over to NCB for deeper investigation and court action.
These operations highlight NCB’s growing momentum in tackling drug smuggling across India’s borders and beyond, from opium busts in the north to methamphetamine seizures in the northeast.
