Opposition parties in Maharashtra are pushing for urgent action after devastating floods hit the state. Heavy rains have caused widespread damage in regions like Marathwada, Vidarbha, and Western Maharashtra, leaving farmers and residents in distress. On Monday, leaders from the NCP(SP) and Congress wrote to the Governor, calling for a special three-day session of the state legislature to tackle the crisis and secure a quick financial relief package for affected farmers.
NCP(SP) MLA and former minister Jayant Patil led the charge. “The government needs to call a special session right away,” Patil said. “Farmers, livestock, homes, and everyday life have all suffered massive losses, but we haven’t seen any real help yet. We must discuss compensation and relief packages in detail and make bold decisions to support people.”
Patil specifically demanded Rs 50,000 per acre in immediate aid for farmers whose crops got wiped out by the Maharashtra floods.
Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar echoed the call in his letter to the Governor. He highlighted how excessive rainfall destroyed crops across more than 4 lakh hectares, eroded farmlands, and led to almost zero production this season. “Many animals drowned, houses collapsed, and sadly, lives were lost in the flooding,” Wadettiwar noted. Power outages hit hard after poles and wires fell, while broken roads crippled transport and communication between villages and cities. Contaminated water now poses serious health risks to communities.
Wadettiwar described the situation as an unprecedented natural disaster gripping Maharashtra. “Farmers and ordinary people face total devastation and can’t recover without fast support,” he said. He urged the government to declare a “wet drought” immediately, offer a full loan waiver for farmers, and provide blanket financial assistance to those hit by the heavy rain in Maharashtra.
“This is the moment to deliver on our promise of loan waivers for all affected farmers,” Wadettiwar added. “We also need proper assessments of crop and property damage followed by swift compensation to help rebuild lives.”
The leaders stressed that only concrete policy moves, like a comprehensive rehabilitation package, can pull the state out of this flood crisis and aid recovery for farmers, workers, and citizens.
