Bhubaneswar, Odisha – Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida met the chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) to discuss a shocking gang‑rape case that took place on Friday in Durgapur, West Bengal. The victim is a second‑year medical student from Jaleswar, Balasore district, who was attacked after leaving campus for dinner with a male friend.
Parida posted on X that the NCW’s fact‑finding team has issued a set of strong recommendations for the West Bengal government. The report calls for a fair investigation, swift prosecution, better safety for the victim, medical care, academic relief, a security audit, and strict institutional accountability.
The case drew national attention. Earlier Monday evening, the BJP Mahila Morcha staged a protest in Bhubaneswar and burned an effigy of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “It is shameful that the CM, a woman, showed no empathy for our girl,” said Aishwarya Biswal, the Mahila Morcha president. She warned that the state’s failure to protect women is part of a wider rise in gender‑based violence. The congress‑aligned Nari Nyay Vahini also protested, demanding justice for the student.
Police in West Bengal have arrested five men charged with the crime. Meanwhile, the Odisha State Commission for Women met the student at a hospital in Durgapur to check her condition. The case highlights the urgent need for better protection of women and a transparent legal response.
