Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed deep grief over a deadly stampede at a political rally in Karur that claimed 39 lives. The tragedy unfolded on Saturday during an event organized by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor and president Vijay. Stalin called it the worst incident of its kind in the state’s history, with no political rally ever causing so many deaths before.
Standing before reporters in Kurur, Stalin shared his shock. “I’m here with a heavy heart, struggling to put into words the horror that happened in Karur,” he said. He was in Chennai around 7:45 p.m. when he first heard the news. Right away, he contacted former Minister Senthil Balaji to check on the situation and sent him to the hospital. As reports of rising deaths came in, Stalin directed nearby ministers to rush to the scene.
The stampede left 39 people dead and 51 others fighting for their lives in intensive care units. “This kind of tragedy must never happen again,” Stalin vowed. To support the victims’ families, the government will provide Rs 10 lakh to each family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh to those injured in the Karur stampede. Stalin also announced an inquiry commission, led by a retired High Court judge, to uncover what went wrong.
He steered clear of political blame, promising action based on facts. “The inquiry will reveal the truth,” he said. “No political angles from me—once we know what happened, we’ll take strict measures.”
Late Saturday, Stalin flew from Chennai to Trichy and drove to Karur. He visited the Government Medical College and Hospital, where he met the injured from the Vijay rally stampede and comforted their families. He paid heartfelt tributes to those who lost their lives in the Tamil Nadu tragedy.
