Northeast Frontier Railway makes history with first cement delivery to new Nagaland station
In a boost for rail connectivity in India’s Northeast, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) unloaded its first full rake of cement at the brand-new Molvom railway station in Nagaland. Officials shared the exciting news on Thursday after the successful delivery on Wednesday.
NFR spokesperson Kapinjal Kishore Sharma explained that the rake included 41 wagons packed with 2,624 tonnes of cement from a private company in Telangana. The cargo traveled over 2,500 kilometers to reach Molvom, offering industries a cheaper and greener transport option that supports Nagaland’s economic growth.
This milestone highlights NFR’s push to improve freight services in the region. Molvom station, located in Chümoukedima District, forms part of the Dhansiri-Zubza rail line. It could soon become Nagaland’s third major railway hub, joining Dimapur and Shokhüvi.
The full Dimapur-Kohima railway line stretches 82.50 kilometers, with just 2.75 km in Assam and the rest in Nagaland. It connects Dhansiri in Assam to Zubza near Kohima and features eight stations: Dhansiri, Dhansiripar, Shokhuvi, Molvom, Pherima, Piphema, Menguzuma, and Zubza. Along the way, you’ll find 27 major bridges, 149 minor ones, five road over bridges, 15 road under bridges, and 20 tunnels totaling 31 kilometers.
NFR kicked off passenger services on the 16.5-km Dhansiri-Shokhuvi section back in October 2021, linking it to routes in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. The latest addition, the 14.64-km Shokhuvi-Molvom stretch, opened in March 2025.
As India’s key rail network expands in the Northeast, NFR serves states like Nagaland, Assam, and Arunachal, plus parts of West Bengal and Bihar. This first rake at Molvom shows NFR’s dedication to reliable services in remote areas while cutting carbon emissions to hit net-zero goals by 2030.
Meanwhile, rail progress continues across the region. On September 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway project in Mizoram, connecting the capital Aizawl to the network. This makes Aizawl the fourth Northeast capital with rail links, after Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar.
Modi also started three new trains: the weekly Sairang-Anand Vihar (Delhi) Rajdhani Express, the tri-weekly Kolkata-Sairang-Kolkata Express, and the daily Guwahati-Sairang-Guwahati Express. These moves promise faster travel and stronger ties for the Northeast.
