NHRC Steps In to Tackle Fertiliser Shortage Crisis for Indian Farmers
In a big move to help farmers facing tough times, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has stepped up. On Friday, it ordered chief secretaries across all states and Union Territories to make sure farmers get urea and DAP fertilisers on time and without any hassle. This comes amid the critical Kharif sowing season, when every delay hits farmers hard.
The NHRC took action after a complaint highlighted severe fertiliser shortages in several states. Farmers are queuing up for hours, struggling to get these essential supplies for their crops. The body, led by member Priyank Kanoongo, sees this as a major issue affecting poor farmers’ livelihoods.
To keep things peaceful, NHRC also instructed Directors General of Police (DGPs) in every state and UT to stop any rough handling of farmers. No lathi charges, abusive language, or force against those waiting in long lines for fertiliser distribution. The commission wants authorities to probe reports of police using force on farmers and submit a detailed report soon.
NHRC didn’t stop there. It urged secretaries from the Union Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers to ensure smooth fertiliser supply chains. Everyone involved must file an Action Taken Report (ATR) within two weeks.
The complaint painted a grim picture: shortages of key fertilisers like urea and DAP are causing real distress. Farmers worry about crop failure, and in some places, police have even resorted to lathi charges on desperate crowds. The complainant called on NHRC for urgent help to fix the distribution mess and investigate why these shortages keep happening.
Under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, NHRC noted that if these claims hold true, they point to serious human rights violations. This push aims to protect farmers’ rights and get fertilisers flowing fast during this vital farming period. Stay tuned as states respond to these directives.
