The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the Karnataka state government and the chief police officer to submit a full investigation report within two weeks. The request follows a shocking media story about a 64‑year‑old father who allegedly had to pay bribes at every stage after his daughter, a graduate of IIT Madras and IIM Ahmedabad, died of a brain haemorrhage in Bengaluru on September 18.
The commission said the paper’s report, posted on October 30, turns a mother‑daughter goodbye into a nightmare of corruption and callous bureaucracy. If the claims are correct, they represent serious breaches of human rights.
According to the story, the father’s problems began when he called an ambulance after his daughter’s collapse. The driver’s charges were “over‑priced”. When the police were notified, the officers took a bribe before providing copies of the First Information Report (FIR) and the post‑mortem report. The crematorium staff also demanded money after the family donated the girl’s eyes. A death certificate from the Mahadevapura Municipal Office was not issued until the father paid an additional bribe, even after a senior officer intervened.
The NHRC’s notice was sent to Karnataka’s Chief Secretary and to the Director General of Police, urging a living‑facts update. “If these allegations are true, they are a flag‑rant violation of human rights,” the commission said in a statement.
Apart from the bribery complaint, the NHRC had already urged 19 state governments and four union territory administrations to take pre‑emptive steps to protect the most vulnerable population from the upcoming winter cold wave. The body asked governments to shield newborns, children, the poor, the elderly, the homeless and beggars from harsh weather, and to submit action–taken reports on the measures implemented.
In short, Karnataka is under pressure to explain the alleged bribery chain that turned a family’s grief into a public human‑rights violation. The state must respond within two weeks, or the NHRC could pursue further action.
