During Bihar’s election campaign, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar took to X to launch a harsh criticism of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Lalu Prasad Yadav family. He said that when the RJD ruled from 1990 to 2005, the state fell into a wave of crime, corruption and anarchy.
Kumar warned that before 2005, many Biharis stayed home after six in the evening. “Fear was everywhere,” he wrote. “Crime turned into a business. Women weren’t safe, kidnappings and extortions were rampant, and local industries shut down because of terror.”
He added that the RJD government “paralysed the administration” and that being called a Bihari once carried shame. In contrast, the chief minister said his own government made law and order a top priority after coming to power that same year.
“Since 2005 we have implemented zero tolerance for crime and corruption,” Kumar said. “Now Bihar feels like a place of love, brotherhood, and peace.” He highlighted that the number of police stations grew from 817 in 2005 to more than 1,380 today, while police strength increased from 42,481 to over 125,000 officers. He also praised the state’s focus on women’s empowerment, noting a 35 % reservation for women in the police force—one of the highest rates in India—and the creation of the Tribal Women’s Self‑Respect Battalion. Recruitment drives are underway to fill more than 229,000 new police posts.
Kumar pointed to forensic labs, the State Constable Recruitment Board (established in 2008) and the Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission (created in 2017) as reforms that made the police more effective and streamlined hiring.
He claimed that 2005 marked a turning point. “Today, Bihar is a land of opportunity and progress,” he said. “We’re creating jobs, growing industries, and the people can be proud of their state. That’s why being called a Bihari is now a badge of honor, not shame.”
Concluding his message, Kumar declared that Biharis would never return to the era of anarchy. He urged voters to remember the reforms and progress that have shaped Bihar today as election day approaches.
