Kolkata – Floods and landslides that hammered the hills of North Bengal have slowly eased over the past 24 hours, and authorities reported no new deaths so far today.
The official death toll still stands at 39, as tallied by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local district teams in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri. That number has not changed since Thursday morning.
Recovery works have gained momentum. Many damaged roads in the hills are now clear, making it easier for residents and emergency crews to move around. Power has also been largely restored, although some remote peaks still lack electricity.
School life in the hills remains disrupted. Roughly 18 schools across Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong suffered heavy damage—from broken roofs to collapsed classrooms. When these schools will reopen is still uncertain because repairs are ongoing.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will head back to the hills on October 13. Her prior visit last week kept her mainly in the plains; this trip will focus on the damaged highland areas.
West Bengal has estimated the damage to state property in the two hill districts—Darjeeling and Kalimpong—at about ₹10.62 crore. That figure is provisional; a final tally will come after a full assessment of losses in the hills, Terai, and Dooars regions, including Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar.
District officials say the main losses are in roads, culverts, and water tanks. The blocks most affected by road damage are Pedong, Lava, Gorubathan, and Kalimpong.
These updates come as the government pushes to restore infrastructure and get schools back on track after the catastrophic flood and landslide season.
