Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged everyone to show political restraint after the sudden death of beloved singer and actor Zubeen Garg. He stressed that no one should use this tragedy for personal gain or political points while the state grieves.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati on Sunday, Sarma highlighted how deeply Garg’s passing has touched people across Assam. “The whole state feels the emotional weight right now,” he said. “It’s wrong to turn this into politics or try to boost your own popularity off such a sad event.”
Garg, a household name in Assam for more than three decades, died in Singapore on September 19. His death has sparked intense public interest and drawn comments from politicians and community leaders. As one of the region’s top cultural icons, he leaves a huge gap in Assam’s entertainment scene.
Sarma made it clear that the state government’s top focus is the ongoing investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death. He called on everyone to let the Special Investigation Team (SIT) do its job without interference. The SIT, led by M.P. Gupta, Special Director General of Police in Assam’s CID, has Rosie Kalita, Senior Superintendent of Police from the CM Vigilance cell, as the lead investigator. They’re working on a fast-paced probe to uncover the facts.
The government promises full support to Singapore authorities and Garg’s family to get to the bottom of what happened. “We must find the truth,” Sarma said. “If there’s any foul play, we’ll deliver justice. But let’s not make this a political battleground.”
As Assam continues to mourn Zubeen Garg, Sarma asked for calm, patience, and respect in all discussions. “Zubeen lives in every Assamese heart,” he added. “His legacy deserves better than turning into a tool for scoring points.”
