Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu took charge on Thursday to tackle heavy rainfall and strong winds battering north coastal Andhra Pradesh. From his residence in Amaravati, he held a video call with district collectors to check on the ground situation and stressed the need for steady power supply amid the chaos.
With the India Meteorological Department warning of potential flash floods in some areas, Naidu urged officials to stay vigilant and keep residents updated. He pushed for a 24/7 control room to deliver essential services and instructed teams to prepare for any emergency, including moving people to safer spots if needed.
The downpours and gusts stem from a deep depression brewing in the Bay of Bengal. The Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre reports it could make landfall late Thursday or early Friday between Paradip and Gopalpur in neighboring Odisha.
North coastal Andhra Pradesh faces the brunt. Districts like Srikakulam, Parvathipuram Manyam, and Vizianagaram—along with Yanam—could see heavy to very heavy rain, with isolated spots getting over 20 cm. A red alert is in place here, raising fears of flash floods.
Visakhapatnam, Alluri Sitharama Raju, and Anakapalli districts have an orange alert for similar heavy downpours. Expect heavy rain in spots across Kakinada, Yanam, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, East Godavari, and Eluru too.
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority warns of winds gusting 40-60 kmph along the coast. Officials advise folks to steer clear of trees, shaky old buildings, and billboards.
