Northeast Bamboo Conclave 2025 Sparks Big Ideas for Sustainable Growth in Guwahati

Guwahati in Assam buzzed with excitement on Thursday as the Northeast Bamboo Conclave 2025 kicked off. This lively event gathered policymakers, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators from India and beyond to brainstorm the future of the bamboo sector in Northeast India. If you’re into sustainable development or green business opportunities, this gathering highlighted how bamboo could transform the region’s economy.

The North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC) organized the conclave, with strong backing from the North Eastern Council (NEC), the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), and the National Bamboo Mission (NBM). It teamed up with SELCO Foundation as the innovation partner, FICCI for industry insights, and the Assam State Bamboo Mission as the state collaborator. Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) chipped in support, while Nurture and Foster handled knowledge sharing.

Tying in perfectly with World Bamboo Day 2025, the theme focused on boosting investments, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects, and building a bio-economy around bamboo. The day started with an energetic inauguration, followed by technical talks and a top-level panel discussion. They mapped out a clear roadmap for a thriving "Viksit Bamboo Sector" in a developed Northeast by 2047.

M.C. Omi Ningshen, Managing Director of NECBDC, fired up the crowd during his speech. "This conclave isn’t just talk—it’s a real movement to tap into bamboo’s huge potential for green growth and jobs in Northeast India," he said. He stressed aligning with the National Bamboo Mission to spark partnerships, attract investments, and roll out innovations. "By blending old-school knowledge with cutting-edge tech, market smarts, and inclusive strategies, we’re set to create a tough, world-class bamboo industry. It drives sustainable development and boosts prosperity. Sure, government policies will speed things up, but private companies and public sector units must jump in for investments, new tech, and strong market links."

The opening session got everyone on the same page with presentations on India’s bamboo value chain, fresh opportunities from the National Bamboo Mission, and the worldwide demand for bamboo products. Attendees heard inspiring success stories from Northeast entrepreneurs, showing how innovative ideas lead to real, eco-friendly progress.

A major highlight? Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) got signed right there, locking in fresh commitments to strengthen the bamboo ecosystem. Deals with Numaligarh Refinery and SELCO Foundation targeted CSR-led projects. Plus, new pacts with IIT Guwahati and NID Ahmedabad promise exciting collaborations. Just recently, NECBDC inked a big MoU with the Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) to build homegrown bamboo processing machines— a smart move for self-reliance and affordable tech in the sector.

Technical sessions dove deeper into growing small businesses (MSMEs), export connections, and eco-friendly supply chains. Experts from Amazon, Bamboostan, and the Assam State Bamboo Mission shared practical tips to make it all happen.

The day wrapped with a forward-thinking panel, featuring voices from NEC, NEHHDC, FICCI, SIDBI, NID, and more. They talked investments, innovation paths, and team-ups to supercharge the Northeast’s bamboo economy into something vibrant and self-sustaining.

Don’t forget, Assam Bio Ethanol Private Limited (ABEPL) just made waves as the region’s first bio-refinery turning bamboo into fuel-grade ethanol. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it recently, marking a huge win for green energy. On top of that, All Time Plastics—an IKEA partner—plans to set up a factory for engineered bamboo wood. This could revolutionize bamboo alternatives to traditional wood, beef up supply chains, and push sustainable packaging.

Overall, the conclave put Northeast India front and center in the national bamboo strategy. It set the stage for smarter policies, industry partnerships, and bold projects. Everyone left buzzing about a bamboo-powered future that protects the environment, creates jobs, and fuels regional growth—helping build a Viksit Bharat through Viksit Bamboo.
