Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off his visit to Aizawl in Mizoram with some big announcements that highlight the Northeast’s rising star status. Speaking on Saturday, he called the region India’s growth engine, noting how it has surged ahead in the last 11 years under his government’s push.
Modi inaugurated the massive 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway project, flagged off three new trains linking Aizawl to Delhi, Kolkata, and Guwahati, and launched or laid foundations for development projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore. “The Northeast used to be seen as a frontier area, but now it’s leading the charge,” he said, emphasizing the shift from neglect to progress.
A key highlight was the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project, a joint India-Myanmar effort to connect Mizoram and other Northeastern states to the Bay of Bengal via waterways and roads. This smart bypass around the Siliguri Corridor will bring the region closer to Southeast Asian countries, boosting trade and tourism. “Once operational, it’ll supercharge the Northeast’s economy as part of our Act East Policy,” Modi added.
He took a dig at past political parties for their vote-bank games that held the region back. “Our focus is on peace and growth,” he said. Thanks to better rail, road, air, and waterway links, neglected states are now at the forefront. Under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) – UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik), helicopter services will soon connect Aizawl to Mizoram’s remote spots, making travel easier for everyone.
Modi also touched on sports, calling India a global hub and praising the Khelo India policy for nurturing talent. Mizoram, with its pool of skilled athletes, stands to gain big, opening doors for the youth. On the startup front, the Northeast is buzzing with over 4,000 ventures and incubators—Mizoram’s young entrepreneurs are jumping in too.
He spotlighted recent events like the Ashtalakshmi festival in Delhi, where Northeastern states showcased textiles, crafts, and agri-products like bamboo, organic ginger, and turmeric to attract tourists and investors. At the Rising Northeast Investor Summit, Modi urged businesses, leading to huge investment proposals that could transform the region’s economy.
Wrapping up on reforms, Modi praised GST for slashing taxes on everyday items like medicines and insurance, easing the load on common people—unlike the heavy burdens under previous regimes. He also hailed ‘Operation Sindoor,’ where India’s armed forces and ‘Made in India’ weapons showed the world our strength against terrorists. “India is the world’s fastest-growing economy,” he declared.
This marks Modi’s second visit to Mizoram since 2014. After Aizawl, he headed to Manipur to continue his Northeast tour.
