Bhubaneswar, Oct. 21 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally filed a complaint with Odisha’s Election Commission over the nomination of Congress candidate Ghasiram Majhi for the upcoming Nuapada by‑election. The BJP argues that Majhi hid his criminal record in the affidavit he submitted for the by‑election, even though he previously listed the same two cases when contesting the 2024 general elections.
During the 2024 polls, Majhi declared that he had two cases registered against him at the Nuapada police station. According to the BJP, those cases are still awaiting trial before the Sub‑Divisional Judicial Magistrate in Nuapada. When Majhi filed his by‑election paperwork, the BJP says he omitted the two pending cases, a move that the party says violates Section 125(A) of the Representation of the People Act.
BJP officials are demanding that the State Election Commission either take penal action against Majhi or reject his nomination papers entirely. “The Congress party has moved away from its core principles,” said Odisha BJP Vice‑President Jatin Mohanty. “Its leaders routinely hide their criminal pasts, and that is unacceptable. The Nuapada by‑election is a clear example of this problem.”
The BJP’s complaint highlights concerns over transparency and fairness in the electoral process, pointing to a broader issue of candidates with criminal backgrounds running for office in India. The Election Commission is set to review the case and decide whether Majhi’s nomination should stand.
