Prime Minister Narendra Modi lit up Jharsuguda in Odisha on Saturday, kicking off a wave of excitement after unveiling a slew of development projects. He hailed the state’s fast-paced growth as a “double engine” powering ahead, with fresh initiatives worth thousands of crores set to boost both Odisha and the nation.
Modi spotlighted the launch of BSNL’s homegrown 4G services, marking a big step for indigenous telecom tech in India. He also shared great news: the central government has greenlit two new semiconductor units for Odisha, fueling the “Make in India” push from chips to ships.
“A year and a half back, during the assembly elections, Odisha’s people committed to a brighter future called Developed Odisha. Today, that vision is racing forward on double engines,” Modi said in his address. “I’ve always believed in Odisha’s huge potential and the talent of its people. Blessed by nature, the state has endured decades of poverty, but this decade will bring prosperity. Our government is delivering major projects to make it happen.”
Modi emphasized helping the underprivileged, announcing approvals for nearly 50,000 pucca houses in Odisha. These sturdy homes will ease life for poor families, Dalits, backward classes, and tribals today and for generations to come. “Nationwide, we’ve given over 4 crore poor families solid roofs,” he noted. “In Odisha, thousands of homes are already under construction, and today we’re approving for 50,000 more families.”
On self-reliance, Modi talked up the shipbuilding boom. “From chip to ship, India must stand on its own feet. Strong economies prioritize shipbuilding—it aids trade, tech, and national security,” he explained. “In crises, our own ships ensure smooth imports and exports. That’s why the BJP government approved a massive 70,000 crore rupees package for large-scale shipbuilding across the country.”
With Navratri in full swing, Modi expressed gratitude for blessings from local deities Maa Samoli and Maa Ramochani Devi. “These holy days let me connect with you all on this sacred land. Your faith fuels our strength—I bow to you,” he said warmly.
The event, attended by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, rolled out projects totaling over Rs 60,000 crore. These span telecom, railways, higher education, healthcare, skill development, and rural housing—key drivers for Odisha’s growth.
In telecom, Modi commissioned more than 97,500 4G mobile towers built with swadeshi technology at a cost of about Rs 37,000 crore. BSNL leads with over 92,600 sites, while another 18,900 under the Digital Bharat Nidhi will link 26,700 remote villages in border areas and left-wing extremism zones, reaching over 20 lakh new users. These solar-powered towers form India’s largest green telecom network, promoting sustainable development.
Railways got a major upgrade too. Modi laid foundation stones for a rail flyover at Sambalpur-Sarla, doubling of the Koraput-Baiguda line, and the Manabar-Koraput-Gorapur line. These will speed up freight and passenger traffic in Odisha and nearby states. He also flagged off the Amrit Bharat Express from Berhampur to Udhna in Surat, offering affordable travel that boosts tourism and jobs.
Healthcare steps up with upgrades to MKCG Medical College in Berhampur and VIMSAR in Sambalpur, turning them into top super-specialty hospitals. Expect more beds, trauma units, dental colleges, better maternal and child care, and stronger academic setups.
Education shines brighter with expansions at eight IITs, adding spots for 10,000 new students in four years. Plus, new drives for technical education and skill development will equip Odisha’s youth for the future.
CM Majhi heaped praise on Modi, noting his seven visits to Odisha since taking office. “Last year, on your birthday, you launched the Subhadra Yojana, giving over 1 crore women Rs 10,000 yearly—it’s transforming lives,” Majhi said. Modi also handed out sanction orders to 50,000 beneficiaries under the Antyodaya Gruha Yojana, offering pucca houses and aid to vulnerable groups like the disabled, widows, terminally ill, and disaster victims.
Chief ministers from eight states, including Maharashtra’s Devendra Fadnavis, Assam’s Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi Adityanath, joined virtually, alongside Union ministers. This Odisha development push highlights Modi’s vision for a stronger, self-reliant India.
