Oil India reports occurrence of natural gas in Andaman Shallow offshore block

Oil India Limited, a key state-owned company under India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, just shared some promising news from its offshore exploration efforts. The firm reported finding natural gas in its second exploratory well, named Vijayapuram-2, located in the Offshore Andaman Block AN-OSHP-2018/1. This block falls under the government’s Open Acreage Licensing Policy, or OALP, which opens up new areas for energy exploration.
The announcement came in a press release on Friday from Noida in Uttar Pradesh. During early production tests, gas samples showed clear signs of natural gas flowing intermittently. Company officials are now running more tests, including gas isotope studies, to figure out exactly where this gas comes from and how it got there.
Early assessments suggest this discovery could point to a nearby source of hydrocarbons, a path for gas migration, or even a buildup of reserves. That’s huge for shaping Oil India’s future drilling plans and boosting India’s overall hydrocarbon exploration.
They’re also checking out other potential spots higher up in the well to get a better sense of how much gas might be there. This marks the first confirmed hydrocarbon find in the ongoing campaign in the Andaman Shallow Offshore Block, and Oil India wants to keep investors and stakeholders in the loop as things progress.
