Kolkata police say the vandalisation of a Kali shrine in Kakdwip, West Bengal, was a single, local incident, not related to any political unrest. The attack happened at a temple in Suryanagar gram panchayat on Thursday.
Police named the suspect as Narayan Halder, a 28‑year‑old resident of Kakdwip. He allegedly broke the idol while drunk and now admits to the crime. The authorities say he expressed remorse when questioned and admit he was inebriated at the time.
“We acted on intelligence and arrested Narayan Halder, who confessed and said he regretted it,” a West Bengal Police post on social media read. “The case appears to be a local disturbance, and we are all the more determined to bring all involved to justice.”
The investigation is still underway and the matter will be brought to court. Police are also looking for other people who might have helped or identified other suspects. “We are checking CCTV footage and other evidence,” a police spokesperson told reporters.
Two charges have been filed: one for road blockade and another for vandalism. No one else has been arrested in the blockade case yet, but the police say they will keep looking.
The police urged residents not to spread or believe rumours about the incident. “The sanctity of Maa Kali is very important to us. We will do everything we can to protect religious feelings and uphold peace,” the statement added.
This incident highlights the need for calm and accurate reporting in a region where religious sites are deeply respected. The police have pledged to keep the public informed as the investigation progresses.
