In a quiet town on the east coast of India, a tragic explosion turned a routine delivery into a disaster on Sunday. A parcel of fireworks sent to Parvathipuram in Andhra Pradesh blew up at the ANL courier location inside an APSRTC complex, killing one man and injuring five others.
The blast struck in the afternoon, shattering the calm afternoon crowd. Six parcel workers were hurt—three suffered serious burns and three had less severe injuries. The injured were rushed to the Regional Area Hospital in Parvathipuram. The three most badly hurt were transferred to Visakhapatnam for advanced care. Unfortunately, one of the workers, Ramesh, died in a private hospital later that night.
The incident has rattled local officials. In-charge minister K. Atchenaidu and Home Minister V. Anitha expressed deep regret and called for the best possible treatment for those injured. They met with the district Collector and Superintendent of Police to discuss safety measures and the investigation.
Preliminary reports reveal that a group of traders bought firecrackers and shipped them from Vizianagaram to Parvathipuram. While handling the parcel, the fireworks detonated, causing the explosion and the injuries. The explosion also sparked panic among nearby residents and led to urgent visits from fire‑tenders and police.
Parvathipuram, the district headquarters, is known for its busy transport hubs, but it is also strictly prohibited to transport fireworks on APSRTC buses due to safety risks. Many officials blame negligent handling at the courier point for this tragedy.
Parvatipuram MLA Bonela Vijaya Chandra visited the scene, spoke with the wounded, and urged the police to investigate the incident thoroughly. He criticized the ANL authorities for accepting a forbidden firecracker package and called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations.
This unfortunate event highlights the danger of improper handling of fireworks and the importance of strict compliance with transport rules in Andhra Pradesh. The authorities are expected to deliver a detailed report soon.
