New Delhi, Oct 5 () – The BJP has challenged a 2023 report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) that named Kolkata the safest city in India. In response, opposition parties said the BJP is doubting its own government’s data and pointed out that the NCRB falls under the Union Home Ministry headed by BJP minister Amit Shah.
The NCRB data shows Kolkata kept its top spot for the fourth straight year. In 2023 the city recorded 83.9 cognisable offences per lakh residents – the lowest rate among 19 major Indian cities with populations above 20 lakh. Across those cities the average crime rate was 828 per lakh. Kolkata’s rate has fallen sharply, from 103.5 in 2021 to 86.5 in 2022, according to the report.
BJP officials say the West Bengal police have under‑reported crimes to present the state in a favorable light, and they question how the data could be trusted.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi fired back at the BJP’s claims. “The problem with the BJP is that in the states where they are in power, they fail to ensure safety, especially for women,” she told . “BJP‑ruled states should adopt West Bengal’s strategies to curb crime. If they follow Bengal’s principles, their cities could become safer for women.” She urged parties to rise above politics on this issue.
Uttar Pradesh Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput added that the BJP’s doubts should be raised directly with the Home Ministry. “This shows a lack of trust in Amit Shah and hints at divisions within the BJP. The party seems unhappy with PM Modi’s leadership,” he said.
The debate highlights growing scrutiny of crime statistics and the need for transparent, reliable data from the union’s crime‑recording agency.
