Asaduddin Owaisi, the chief of the All India Majlis‑ul‑Wali‑Islam (AIMIM), welcomed the Indian government’s decision to upgrade its Technical Mission in Kabul to a full embassy. He said the move was vital for India’s security and interests in Afghanistan, especially given the country’s geopolitical position near Pakistan and China.
Owaisi told that India needs a complete diplomatic presence in Afghanistan to shape the country’s future and safeguard its own stability. “India should build full diplomatic ties with Afghanistan,” he said. He added that a strong embassy would help monitor cross‑border terrorism that threatens both nations.
The comment comes after Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi visited India from October 9 to 16. Muttaqi met Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Delhi and thanked Indian leaders for welcoming him to Deoband, a key Muslim center in Uttar Pradesh. He also expressed hope that India–Afghanistan relations would deepen.
Jaishankar highlighted that India remains a “well‑wisher” of the Afghan people and is committed to the country’s sovereignty and progress. He warned that shared threats—especially terrorism—endanger both nations, urging tighter cooperation.
In a separate quote, Owaisi criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for praising Israel’s prime minister, pointing out that the Israeli leader faces an International Criminal Court warrant. Owaisi called the Israeli regime “genocidal” and questioned how the Indian government could celebrate such a leader. He also questioned the lack of clarity surrounding the current Israel‑Hamas ceasefire, saying that the Palestinian death toll remains high and the Palestinian Authority is invisible.
Owaisi, who has long pushed for engagement with the Taliban, said that many in the ruling BJP and apart from his party had mocked him for talking about the Taliban. He recalled standing in Parliament in 2016, suggesting that India should open dialogue with the Taliban. He stressed that Taliban ties would prevent Afghan influence from falling under China or Pakistan.
Overall, the upgrade of India’s mission in Kabul marks a significant step in a developing relationship. It also highlights ongoing debates within India about how best to engage with Afghanistan and the region’s complex dynamics.
