Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his deep sorrow on Tuesday over the death of senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra, describing him as an outstanding leader who truly understood people’s everyday struggles.
Malhotra, born in Lahore in December 1931, passed away early that morning at AIIMS in New Delhi. He was 93 years old.
In a heartfelt post on X, Modi wrote: “Shri Vijay Kumar Malhotra Ji distinguished himself as an outstanding leader, who had a very good understanding of people’s issues. He played a vital role in strengthening our party in Delhi. He is also remembered for his Parliamentary interventions. Pained by his passing away. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
Throughout his long career in Indian politics, Malhotra served as a five-time Member of Parliament and two-time MLA from Delhi. He led the Delhi Pradesh Jana Sangh as president from 1972 to 1975 and headed the BJP’s Delhi unit twice, between 1977-1980 and 1980-1984.
Delhi BJP highlights Malhotra’s active role alongside figures like Kedar Nath Sahni and Madan Lal Khurana. The party credits him with keeping the BJP strong in the capital for many years. His standout achievement came in the 1999 general elections, where he defeated then-future Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by a massive margin.
Even in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, Malhotra stood out as the only BJP candidate to win a seat in Delhi. Over 45 years, his dedication made him one of the most respected senior BJP leaders in the city.
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva also paid tribute, calling Malhotra’s life a model of simplicity and commitment to public service. “He worked tirelessly to spread RSS ideology in Delhi since the Jan Sangh days,” Sachdeva said. “His journey will keep inspiring all BJP workers.”
