Kolkata, Oct 19 – More than 150 people in Daspur, a village in West Midnapore district of West Bengal, fell ill after eating food offered at a community puja. Police said the incident began Saturday night when devotees gathered to share the manasa puja prasad, a traditional khichri dish.

Within hours of eating the prasad, many reported vomiting and diarrhea. Women and children were among the patients, and at least five people were rushed to the hospital for severe symptoms.

Local officials quickly responded. A medical camp was set up on Sunday morning in the Daspur village, and the block development officer, Dipankar Biswas, inspected the scene and helped coordinate treatment. The health department provided primary care at the camp.

The police are investigating the cause. Water samples have been collected to rule out contamination, and authorities say the situation is under control after the emergency response.

The incident highlights the importance of food safety at large community gatherings. Residents and visitors in West Bengal will be watching closely as the investigation continues.
