Bhubaneswar, India – Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi dropped some alarming stats on crimes against women in the state assembly this week. With outrage growing over rising violence against women and children, Majhi shared details from June 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025, painting a grim picture of the situation.
In his written response to lawmakers, Majhi, who oversees the home department, said police registered a staggering 37,611 cases of crimes against women during that period. That includes 2,933 rape cases in Odisha, highlighting the urgent need to tackle sexual violence head-on.
Other numbers are just as troubling. Women reported 1,278 instances of sexual harassment, while 2,161 cases involved public disrobing – acts that strip victims of dignity in broad daylight. Molestation complaints hit 9,181, and there were 8,227 kidnappings and abductions of women.
Dowry-related issues remain a major concern too. Police logged 5,464 cases of torture linked to dowry demands and 6,134 for non-dowry torture. Tragically, 44 women took their own lives due to dowry harassment, and 264 dowry-related homicides occurred. In a heartbreaking detail, Majhi noted that 56 female students in Odisha committed suicide over the same timeframe.
Acid attacks, though fewer, are no less horrific: three cases against women and two attempts.
On a positive note, the state is fighting back with better systems for justice. Majhi explained that Odisha now has 44 Fast Track Special Courts dedicated to crimes against women, plus an additional court in Bhubaneswar operating as a fast-track unit. The government promises to keep pushing for quicker resolutions in these sensitive cases, aiming to support victims and deter offenders.
These revelations come as Odisha ramps up efforts to curb violence against women, a pressing issue across India.
