Renowned Indian classical singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra has died at the age of 89, leaving fans and admirers mourning the loss of a musical legend.
The veteran artist passed away early Thursday morning at 4:15 a.m. in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. He had battled health issues for months, including a recent hospital stay in Varanasi.
Last month, Mishra landed in Sir Sunderlal Hospital at Banaras Hindu University after chest pain and a minor heart attack. Doctors moved him to the ICU, where they found a chest infection and anemia. He showed improvement and went home just days before his death.
His family will bring his body to Varanasi by 11 a.m. Thursday so people can pay their respects. The final rites will take place there at 7 p.m.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his sorrow on X, formerly Twitter, calling Mishra a pillar of Indian classical music. “I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Pandit Chhannulal Mishra ji,” Modi wrote. “He dedicated his life to enriching Indian art and culture, bringing classical music to the masses and putting Indian traditions on the world stage.”
Modi added a personal touch, noting Mishra’s affection and blessings over the years. The singer even proposed Modi’s name as a candidate for the Varanasi seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, highlighting their close bond.
Mishra’s career shone brightly with honors like the Padma Bhushan in 2010 from the UPA government. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav later gave him the Yash Bharti Award, recognizing his contributions to Hindustani classical music.
Fans remember Mishra for his soulful voice and efforts to make classical music accessible worldwide. His death marks the end of an era for Indian cultural icons.
