Explosive Revelation in West Bengal School Jobs Scam: Partha Chatterjee Pushed for Irregular Appointments Early On

In a stunning courtroom twist, former West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) Chairman Chattaranjan Mondal dropped a bombshell on Friday. He told a special CBI court in Kolkata that ex-Education Minister Partha Chatterjee was already demanding irregularities in school job recruitments even before he became the state’s education boss. This comes as the trial kicks off for the massive multi-crore WBSSC recruitment scam, a case that’s rocked West Bengal politics.

Mondal took the stand as the first witness in the CBI probe, which involves chargesheets packed with details of the alleged corruption. He served as WBSSC Chairman from June 2011 to October 2013. Back then, Chatterjee wasn’t handling education—he was the Commerce and Industries Minister. Instead, current Education Minister Bratya Basu held the education portfolio.

During his testimony, Mondal revealed he quit his four-year term early, after just two and a half years. Why? He refused to bow to pressure from Chatterjee and then-Trinamool Congress General Secretary Mukul Roy for shady hiring practices in school jobs. "I didn’t want to give in," Mondal said firmly. He made it clear that Basu never leaned on him unethically during that time.

Chatterjee’s lawyer tried to poke holes in Mondal’s story, asking if he had ties to any political party later on. Mondal admitted he joined the BJP before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, like many others, and even sat on the party’s manifesto committee for the 2024 polls. But he shot down any suggestions of bias. "I didn’t give any statement to the CBI because of my BJP role," he insisted. "No one pressured me to say anything specific in this West Bengal school recruitment scam case."

The hearing is heating up, with more witness statements set for Saturday and Monday. Once that’s done, lawyers from both sides will dive into arguments and counter-arguments in this high-stakes WBSSC scam trial. Stay tuned as this West Bengal education scandal unfolds—could it expose deeper rot in the system?
