Kalyan Banerjee, a Lok Sabha MP from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), again sparked a heated clash with West Bengal’s Governor, C.V. Ananda Bose. The TMC leader accused the governor of “sheltering BJP‑backed criminals” and of supplying arms from the Raj Bhavan to target TMC workers. In response, Governor Bose has denied the claims, sought a legal opinion, and ordered a thorough sweep of his residence by security teams, including a bomb squad and sniffer dogs. An official police file—an FIR—has reportedly been filed at the Raj Bhavan.
The confrontation is part of a pattern of confrontations that TMC’s Banerjee has dragged into the public eye. He has already been slammed for calling the governor a “BJP stooge” and for making blunt, often explosive remarks in Parliament and on party meetings. These episodes have stretched relations between the central government and West Bengal, adding fuel to an already tense political situation.
Banerjee’s combative style has led to significant internal fallout. In August, he resigned as the TMC’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha after facing criticism from senior leaders, including party chairperson Mamata Banerjee. More recently, a public argument with fellow MP Mahua Moitra—recorded on video and leaked online—prompted Mamata to instruct the MPs not to comment publicly about the dispute. The TMC’s own Abhishek Banerjee, a party secretary and Mamata’s nephew, has reportedly been reluctant to have Kalyan Banerjee represent the party again in the upcoming 2024 elections.
The contentious interactions have not stopped outside Parliament. Banerjee was seen mimicking Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar in a staged protest, drawing criticism and calls for decorum from senior lawmakers. Despite the controversies, Banerjee remains a prominent figure in the TMC, frequently stirring debate on both state and national stages.
